Inter-District Contests
  1. Only points that are defined in the ASME Student Section contest rules, as passed by the Student Sections Committee (SSC) and approved by the Global Communities Operating Board, may be counted towards the inter-district contest.
  2. A well-organized section will earn points from a wide variety of activities. Each category of this contest has a specified Maximum Baseline Points. The contest baseline is the sum of all the category baselines (1000 points). The contest baseline is reached only if all the category baselines are met. Each category contains multiple events. To ensure diversity some events exhibit a baseline max. In those events, points above the baseline max can only be counted if the contest baseline (1000) is reached. Again, to ensure diversity some events have an event max. Under no circumstances may a section earn more points than specified as an event max. A student section's total contest point count is determined as:
    • If a student section has not earned the baseline in every category, the total point count is the sum of all the points earned in each category at or below the category baseline (<1000).
    •  If a student section has earned the baseline in every category, the total point count is the sum of all the points earned at or above the category baselines, but at or below any event maximums.
  3. A three-tier system is used to determine the ASME Student Section contest First Place, Second Place, and Third Place Inter-district Awards.  The tiers are based on total student section membership at the end of the contest year, February 28(29).  In addition each tier requires a minimum number of points to be earned (at or below each Category's baseline).  The following table illustrates the three-tier system.

    Number of ASME Students

    Baseline Points Required

    Awards

    15* - 50 400 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
    51 - 100 500 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
    101 --- 600 1st, 2nd, and 3rd

*A student section must have at least 15 ASME student members to compete.

  4. The following procedure should be followed to determine the winners in each tier.
    • If no student section reaches the contest baseline, then first place will go to that section that accumulates the most points determined by summing points earned in all categories at or below the category baselines, and at or below any event maximums.
    • If one or more student sections reach the contest baseline, then first place will go to the section that accumulates the most points determined by points earned at and above the baseline maximums, but at or below the event maximums.
    • Second place and third place will follow based on next greatest number of points as outlined above.
  5. Inter-district student section rankings will be determined by communication from the Global Communities operating board or its designee to Deidra Hackley at ASME headquarters. The Global Communities operating board or its designee will report the four schools in each region that earned the most SSC-approved contest points, along with the total student membership of each section.
  6. As soon as possible, Deidra Hackley will notify the winning student sections; the SSC, and the district leaders. The student section names and point counts of the three winning point scores in each tier will be made public.
