(Maximum Baseline Points = 100) The preparation and circulation of news concerning ASME students or their activities or their school of engineering are considered to be significant section objectives. The distribution (hard copy or e-mail) could be to the ASME students, senior section members, alumni, members of the university community, or the public at large through newspapers, magazines, radio, and television. To be most effective it should be directed toward the dissemination of news of students, faculty, the department, and the school of engineering. Including news from the local senior section is an excellent way to encourage graduating students' involvement with ASME as members. Senior sections also schedule tours and technical presentations, which would help with other categories.
Furthermore, it should be distributed frequently and in short bursts of information. Ten two-page newsletters are more desirable than four five-pagers. Newsletters should be broad in content, keeping members informed on a variety of events and people in the news. Meeting announcements or minutes do not constitute a newsletter. Published articles should illustrate the positive involvements of ASME students. The same article published by multiple agencies counts for multiple points. News articles should be reported in the Monthly Report (Supplement 1), and a copy of each article or page should be included in the Final Report. Radio or television exposure should be separately documented by a brief statement as to content, station, day and time.
While the following point system makes News Articles an objective category, the judges do have some discretion in limiting the points. For example, a published article should contain on the order of 100 words or more to earn 10 points.
