Once upon a time, in the far galaxy of Zert, lied the planet of AmEVA'". The AmEVA'"ians made their living by mass transportation methods. Their skill and expertise were known throughout the galaxy, and their motto came to be that - If we can't move it, neither can you ", and offered a gigawatz reward to any planet that housed anything immobile to their services. About four nano-neons ago (that's thirty days or 1.7 dog years to you and me), the inhabitants of the planet Calamar presented the fore-mentioned planet with their first real challenge. The calamarians were an insectivoid race, bearing their young from a huge egg, with a ceremony much resembling that of a (hi Omegan party. The AmEVA'"ians were not prepared to handle anything so massive and yet so frail. So, after everyone exhausted their three heads each, a party was dispatched to Earth to discover if the cunning earthlings could solve their problem. However, due to a wrong turn at Lake Erie, the aliens landed at S.M.U instead of M.I.T. We officers of the A.S.M.E. ask if you will help us solve their problem? They've moved in with me and have developed a taste for throw pillows and small endtables. Can anyone build a device to do such a feat? The AmEVA'"ians have presented us with a set of scaled-down dimensions, for obvious reasons (if they can't move a calamorian egg, where are you going to get one? ). The AmEVA'"ians are in a hurry, so the device that performs the feat the fastest wins. The exact rules are on the next page, and the exact time and place of the competition will be announced later (watch for them on the walls of your favorite Caruth building). So good luck and please help rid me of these three-headed furniture eaters. Sincerely,
P.S. Does anyone have any old endtables they aren't using?
The calamarlan egg will be substituted by a regular grade A hens egg of the following approximate dimensions :
The objective is to build a device which will travel forth, on its own power ( no human assistance allowed ), carrying the empty eggshell, comparable in mass to the spider egg) from its resting~nesting spot on the plain ( a table surface ), back to the original starting position 2~ from the egg ( see diagram below ). The device that completes this task the quickest Is the winner. GOOD LUCK!
