ASME Region IX - Northern Tier RSC Design Contest


List of Materials:

25 rubber bands
1 piece of cardboard (12 in. X 18 in.)
tape (18 in.)
5 dowels (each .25 in. X 36 in.)
5 push pins
1 strip of metal (.623 in. X 12 in.)
1 piece nylon cord (3 ft.)

Description:

There are starving people in Somalia. Your mission is to get food across the ocean to these people. The ocean is 12 feet wide. You can choose what kind of food to send to them:

  • gum balls
  • M&M's


You must choose your food type before you begin construction.

All design and construction must be done by the participants without help from faculty. SCU students or other persons. Use only the materials provided. Not all materials need be used. Machine cannot be touched once set into motion. Food cannot be launched into air by hand with throwing motion.

Contest:

Each design group will be given three chances to get the food to Somalia. The group who gets the most food to Somalia will be declared the winner. In the event of a tie, each tying group will have one more chance; the group who gets closest wins.

Judging:

Contest judges will inspect each machine to make sure contest rules have been satisfied.
