Egg On The Pedestal

Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to design a device which will transport a large fresh egg across the top of a table and deliver it safely on the floor in front of the table. The person (or team) with the fastest delivery time wins the contest. As always, if you are captured by the janitor with egg on your face due to egg on the floor, the Dean of Engineering will disavow any knowledge of your actions.

The challenge of this design is to design some device that will move an object (egg) from one pedestal to another without crushing, dropping, or otherwise damaging it. The pedestals are some 18 inches apart and 4 inches high. There will be two auxiliary pedestals which may be used for leverage.

The limitations upon the design are:

  • Must not cost more than $10.00 (nominal) (exclusive of the material available in the lab)
  • Hands or other parts of body must not touch the egg in movement
  • Human motions limited to ... 2 cranking operations, 1 clamping operations, 1 rotating movement.

The limitations upon operation are:

  • 1 minute to set device on test bed
  • 1 minute to move egg
  • He who breaks egg - cleans up mess
  • Device cannot be hand-held throughout operation
