Destroy a Plane
|
- The plane must be rigged so that, at the release of a single trigger, the plane is torn into the greatest number of pieces possible. the winning entry is the device that reduces the plane to the greatest number of pieces of length 3/8 inch or greater.
- The airplane must be assembled in accordance with package instructions. Only items found in the equipment bag (but not the bag itself) and the fastening materials may be used to construct the destruction device. The fastening materials are found at the designated fastener tables; only two members of each group may approach the tables at any one time. The entry should be prominently labelled with the school name or initials.
NOTE: Scoring, puncturing, scratching, or otherwise weakening of the airplane parts is not permitted. Violation of this rule will result in disqualification.
- At the end of the allotted time, a judge will signal that construction time has ended. The entrants have exactly five (5) minutes to place their devices on a table provided. Any entries not on the table within the allotted time will be disqualified. The entries may be presented with any degree of pre-loading desired. a premature discharge, however, may affect the performance of the entry due to the increased time required to reset the device.
- A judge will call for each entry at random. When called, no more than two group members will bring the device and the empty bag to the test area. Two (2) minutes will be allowed for final loading of the device. The entrants will instruct the judge on how to trigger the device, and the judge will trigger it when the entrant indicates that it is ready. At the time of discharge, the airplane must be completely assembled, and no part may be damaged or altered. In case of accidental breakage of parts, a limited number of spares will be provided.
- After discharge, the number of pieces is determined by the judges. The pieces are picked straight up by the judges, with the uppermost pieces picked up first. In case of two or more pieces remaining loosely attached, the largest piece is lifted; if any other parts fall off, they are counted as separate pieces. Components of the destruction device are ignored.
- After the pieces are counted, they are to be placed into the bag and retained in case a tie results. In this event, the largest piece remaining of each entrants's plane is determined; the smallest of theses pieces indicates the winner (size being determined by the longest dimension of the piece). If the largest pieces are identical, the next largest piece is considered, etc.
GOOD LUCK!
