Deflector Bridge

Objective:

To design an energy absorbent bridge that deflects with a dynamic load applied to its top center.

Rules:

The structure is limited to a vertical deflection of .25 of an inch at the center span.

The maximum weight of the structure is 6000 grams. (Not including the egg's weight.)

An extra large egg will be used.

The hole that the egg sits in will have a diameter of 1-1/4"

The egg must be held by an aluminum plate with a hole located centrally at the bottom center of the structure.

An access space or 3"x3"x3" imaginary cube must be incorporated in structure to install and visualize the egg motion.

No constraints are permitted on the egg other than those of the 1/8" aluminum plate's hole.

The strike plate must be rigidly mounted to the top center of the structure.

Materials are limited to the following:

  1. Balsa wood and popsicle sticks
  2. Rubber band
  3. String (any kind)
  4. Wire (any kind)
  5. Glue or epoxy
  6. Aluminum strike plate with maximum dimensions of 6"x6"x1/8".
  7. Styrofoam
  8. Fasteners (screws, nails, etc.)

How to win:

The structures must withstand the greatest impulse of a 2Kg. weight raised and released at 5cm. intervals. The first release will occur at 5 cm. from the strike plate.

  1. The egg must stay in the hole without vibrating out.
  2. The structure cannot exceed the limit of deflection.
  3. The structure cannot break in any way and must restore itself.
