Rules:
- Each team will consist of one or two people. Registration is limited to approximately 30 teams. Each team will construct a boat to be paddled by one member of the team.
- Each team will be provided with the following:
- 1 78" by 120" sheet of resin impregnated single ply corrugated cardboard
- 55 yards 2" mylar packing tape
- 1 razor knife
- 1 life preserver (PFD)
- 1 canoe paddle
- 1 number placard
- Each team will have one hour to construct a water craft from the material provided.
- Only the materials provided are permitted -- no other tools or materials of any type may be used. This includes pens, pencils, measuring devices, string, wood, plastic, etc. Teams may not share materials.
- While participants are encouraged to make drawings, models, or prototypes, none may be brought to the race or consulted during the building period.
- There are no requirements as to boat design. The PFD must be worn by the paddler. The canoe paddle need not be used, but must be carried by the paddler.
- The building period will commence promptly at 4:00 p.m. and will end one hour later.
- There will be a design judging period at the end of the building period. Boats will be judged on aesthetics and functionality of design.
- The race will be conducted in timed heats of approximately 10, with the overall winner determined by the best time.
- Heats will be organized by boat number, such that heat #1 will include boats 1 through 10, etc. Numbers will be assigned randomly.
- Each heat will start from a designated launching area on shore.
- The team member who is not paddling the boat may assist in launching.
- The course will consist of the following: approximately 30 yards from shore to round the first buoy, approximately 60 yards downstream to round the second buoy, approximately 20 yards towards shore, to pass between two buoys at the finish line. All boats must pass to the outside of the two midstream buoys and must cross the finish line between the designated buoys. Boats need not be afloat when they cross the finish line.
- In the event that an entrant is judged to have intentionally interfered with another competitor, his or her team will be disqualified.
- Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers and to the winners of the design judging. There will be a prize for the most spectacular sinking. Bragging rights can be exercised at the dinner to follow the race.
- In the event of a question concerning the rules, the judges' interpretation of the rules will be final. Participants are encouraged to seek interpretation in advance to avoid misunderstandings.
