Engineering Outreach Initiatives at UMBC Dr. Panos G. Charalambides, Dr. Anne Spence, Susan N. Boyer, and Dr. Taryn Bayles
Driven by the need to broaden the engineering pipeline, the College of Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Maryland - Baltimore County (UMBC) has partnered with the UMBC Department of Education and the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) to change the way students in K-16 perceive the field of engineering.
Faculty members dedicated to advancing engineering education from across the college and UMBC developed a unique program aiming at introducing mathematics students to engineering applications, through algebra. The expectation has been that by exposing students to a revised algebra curriculum that uses engineering applications, middle and high school students will build mathematical skills and understanding while increasing their awareness of and interest in career opportunities in engineering.
The partnership with MSDE has since led to the development of new Technology Education Standards for the state of Maryland that include an understanding of the engineering design and development process.
