"Smart" Partnerships: Challenges, Best Practices, and Opportunities

Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) represents a university consortium focused on advancing scientific research and education through partnerships. Establishing a "Smart" partnership framework can serve as a strong foundation for establishing a collaboratory infrastructure that will foster and promote enhanced science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education opportunities for students and educators. These opportunities range from general student and teacher summer appointments to advanced research and development activities. The challenges faced by institutions will be addressed, along with examples of best practices and lessons learned related to pursuing, establishing, and maintaining strategic partnerships. The growth of our nation's economy depends upon the creation of a critical skills pipeline that can lead to the establishment of centers of excellence at the state and regional levels and builds a learning environment that mirrors the needs of the global marketplace.
