Description
The concept of co-gasification (the combination of different feed-stocks in an existing or planned gasifier) has gained interest recently as gasification facilities desire to blend variable opportunity fuels with a stable baseline of coal.    This webinar outlines the status and technical issues associated with co-gasification.   Topics covered include:
• The environmental and economic benefits of co-gasifying opportunity fuels with coal
• Fundamentals of gasification and its advantages in efficiency and environmental performance
• Behavior of biomass materials in gasification systems including advantages, challenges, and research issues.
• Technology status: gasification, clean-up systems, as well as materials handling and pneumatic conveying systems for co-processing
• Computational modeling status on co-gasification applications

Who Should Attend
Energy technology developers, industrial process gas producers, utility power engineers, boiler owners, design engineers, CFD model developers, software engineers, quality engineers, regulators, program managers, and students interested in energy conversion systems and environmental control of systems.

Instructor Bio
Lawrence J. (Larry) Shadle
Lawrence J. Shadle is a Research Group Leader in the Office of Research and Development at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL).  He has 29 years of experience in energy conversion processes for coal, oil shale, and biomass working with universities, technology developers, state and federal government research organizations, and boiler operators. He received his PhD in Fuel Science from the Pennsylvania State University in 1985.  Since that time he has authored over 130 research articles including articles on: coal and oil shale conversion processes, coal gasification, and gas-solid fluidization.  Dr. Shadle's research groups have provided technical support in several (4) large-scale energy conversion projects.  They have modeled and operated laboratory, bench, and pilot scale high pressure gasification and product gas clean-up systems.  He has defined and conducted cooperative research agreement's with many (8) technology developers, as well as participated in research collaborations with various universities (7), national laboratories (2), and independent research laboratories (4).  The results from these research activities have impacted decisions on funding, process modifications, and operations at numerous commercial plants, four commercial clean coal projects, three large scale demonstration plants, and three pilot plants.  Dr. Shadle has chaired 15 national conference research sessions and organized and administered the Combustion Technology University Alliance including serving as the executive director administering the National Workshop in 2002.
