*These courses may not be applied toward a master’s degree in Computer Science. For those who have not completed the necessary coursework to enter as a graduate student in Computer Science at Stevens (and at other graduate schools), some or all of these courses may be taken by prospective candidates in order to fulfill their requirements. To learn more about what you will need to enter master’s degree studies in Computer Science at Stevens, kindly consult an advisor.
If you’re a professional with a bachelor’s degree, you can earn a graduate certificate in this outstanding online program, Elements of Computer Science, a four-course program delivered by the same superior faculty who teach in conventional settings. You receive the finest professional education using rich e-learning features—threaded discussions, chat, bulletin boards, e-mail, file sharing, whiteboards, and workgroups for in-depth participation. You also have online library privileges, with instant search and retrieval of important databases. Courses are taught at your convenience anytime, anywhere using the most widely adopted distance learning Web system, currently installed in nearly 700 colleges and universities in 36 countries.
Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (MA502)* A broad and essential appreciation of the concepts that form the foundations of computer science. You are introduced to such topics as proportional calculus, predicates and quantifiers, elementary number theory and methods of proof, mathematical induction, elementary set theory, combinatorics, functions and relations, countability, recursion, and O-notation. Stresses the application of these concepts to computer science.
*While this course may taken as one of the four courses in the Elements of Computer Science graduate certificate program, it cannot be applied toward a master’s degree in Computer Science. For those who have not completed the necessary coursework to enter as a graduate student in Computer Science at Stevens, the course may be taken by prospective candidates in order to fulfill their requirements. To learn more about what you will need to enter master’s degree studies in Computer Science at Stevens, kindly consult an advisor.
Computer Organization and Programming (CS550)* Provides a critically valuable introduction to computer organization and assembly language programming. Critically important topics cover the structure of program computers, linking and loading, assembly language programming emphasizing translation of high-level language constructs, data representation and arithmetic algorithms, logic design basics, processor design, and data path, hardwired, and microprogrammed control. To acquire high-level skills, you will receive routine assembly language programming assignments.

Programming in C and UNIX (CS580)* An intensive introduction to C and C++ programming in a UNIX environment. You will come to appreciate important ANSI standard C programming concepts covering standard data types and the structure of a C program. To sharpen your skills, your instructor will give you weekly programming assignments.
