ASME / NASA Summer Internship

ASME Setting The StandardNASA

NASA’s Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate is pleased to partner with ASME to offer an 8 to 10 week paid summer internship opportunity (including housing allowance) for qualified students competing in the Old Guard Oral Presentation competition at the 2008 ASME Student Professional Development Conferences (SPDC’s).

The internship would occur during Summer 2008 and take place at one of the following NASA research centers: 


• Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, CA
• Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA
• Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, OH
Dryden Flight Research Center, CA

To qualify, you should be:

  • an ASME Student Member competing in one of the Old Guard Oral Competitions held at the 2008 ASME Student Professional Development Conferences;
  • a highly motivated undergraduate student (Seniors may apply), with a strong interest in aeronautic/aerospace applications of mechanical engineering.  Original research experience is preferred.  The selected student will be individually matched with a NASA mentor based on similar research interests.
  • a U.S. citizen (NASA Requirement)

Stage #1 --- APPLICATION PACKAGE (please read carefully)

The following four (4) documents should be submitted as attachments in a single e-mail message to nasainternship@asme.org.  The subject line should read “ASME-NASA Internship Application”.  The attachments are:  (Your application e-mail must contain each of these documents in MS Word or PDF format.)

  • NASA/ASME Internship Interest Summary (please download from links below)
  • A one-page (maximum) statement explaining why you would be a good candidate for this position.
  • Letter of recommendation from faculty advisor
  • Your current résumé with contact information

Stage #2 --- SELECTION

From the complete application packages submitted by the April 9 deadline, a joint ASME/NASA selection committee will identify the most promising candidates to move onto the final round of selections.  Finalists will be contacted by the end of April and asked to provide an electronic copy of:

1) their Old Guard Competition presentation (Powerpoint or PDF) and
2) a copy of your academic transcript (PDF Format) (unofficial copy is OK)

Final selection and notification will come from NASA.
