Getting Involved in History and Heritage Activities

This online History and Heritage Center has the most up-to-date activity listing available for landmarking, inventorying, etc.

Many projects — gathering history, documenting, writing, etc. — can be done by the individual on his or her own schedule.

  • For instance: Nominate someone for the Engineer-Historian Award.
  • Visit a landmark and help us update our information by submitting comments to the roster data page (click here for an example of a data page).
  • Or, do some historical research and writing for the History and Heritage Center (to be published online).

Some more ideas:

Needed: Adhoc support for developing web-based materials that put a historical-social context for landmarks and what is missing in the evolutionary lineage of technologies represented on the roster.

Needed: Online moderators for Eyewitness projects. Propose a likely candidate for discussion.

Or if you're inclined to volunteer within your community, consider these:

  • Create a network of technical and academic advisors for local historians — this is a way to collaborate with local historians, writers, librarians, and curators, offering technical expertise to locate and identify artifacts and materials and to validate engineering information. Building bridges between historians and engineers will ensure the accurate recording of history and contribute to the substance and integrity of history programs.
  • Take landmarks beyond the recognition ceremony to oral histories, archive collecting, and local company histories. The ceremony is the beginning, not the end to recognizing the contribution of engineering works. Oral histories add a human dimension to history, providing a road map to documentation. The ceremony often offers a unique gathering of designers, descendants of inventors, etc., in essence a wealth of valuable information that researchers will find indispensable.

Section H&H Committees:  This volunteer position is the mainstay of H&H activities.  If you are interested in the nuts and bolts of designating a landmark, creating an inventory of likely landmark candidates in your area, pursuing the oral or video documentation of some significant engineers, or helping those in your geographic area rediscover their own history, you should look at program activities of interest that are listed on this page and contact your Section chair to volunteer.  If you would like more information on your Section.

Region H&H:  This volunteer position helps support the Sections in your Region in terms of history activities - helping landmark organizers reach the right people, prepare the commemorative brochures, and understand the criteria and the nomination process overall. Generally filled by a volunteer who has experience with landmarking on the Section level, this volunteer serves a vital function in making history activities run smoothly and productively.  A Regional Workshop is held every other year to provide an opportunity to work with the History and Heritage Committee.  If you would like more information on this Regional H&H volunteer position, contact your Regional Vice President or the Regional office.

Division H&H:  This volunteer position is similar to that of the Section H&H chair, while taking a global look at the industry or technological history represented by ASME's Divisions that you are involved with.  If you are interested in the nuts and bolts of designating a landmark, creating an inventory of likely landmark candidates in your engineering interest, pursuing the oral or video documentation of some significant engineers, organizing paper sessions at technical meetings (for history), or helping the program provide indepth looks within specialty areas (wherever that may lead you), the History and Heritage welcomes Division participation and looks forward to working with you.  If you would like more information on this, contact your Division executive committee or the History and Heritage Committee directly.
