Sam Y. Zamrik

ASME President, 2007 - 2008

Sam Y. Zamrik, Ph.D., is the 126th president of ASME serving the 2007-2008 term.  Zamrik is a technical consultant and professor emeritus at Pennsylvania State University.  A fellow of ASME, Dr. Zamrik served as a member of the Board of Governors from 2002 to 2005 and as vice president of the Materials and Structures group from 1998-2001. He was active in the Society’s Continuity and Change initiative and chaired both the Project Management and Reorganization Review Teams.

Zamrik served on the Board of Professional Development from 1995 to 2001 and Board on Pressure Technology Codes and Standards during 1994-2004.  His area of expertise is pressure vessels technology.  With 160 technical publications to his credit, he has explored the topics of fatigue analysis, life prediction, biaxial loading, and thermal analysis.

Zamrik was instrumental in the formation of the former Pipeline Systems Division and the development of the Pressure Vessels and Piping Division.  He served as chair of the Pressure Vessels and Piping Division in 1990-1991, and received the ASME Pressure Vessels and Piping Medal in 1996.  Dr. Zamrik also has a strong record of service with the ASME Journal of Pressure Vessels Technology, which bestows the “Sam Zamrik Literature Award” for outstanding achievement.  He served as editor of the journal from 1993-2005. 

Throughout his 35 years as a member and leader in ASME, Zamrik has been active in student outreach, codes and standards workshops, and volunteer training.  He also has been involved in global initiatives, both within the Society and as a visiting professor at American University in Cairo, Egypt. 

In 2004, he was named Penn State Outstanding Alumni and in 2006, he received the ASME Dedicated Service Award.  In 2007, he received the Penn State Engineering Society’s Distinguished Service Award.

In addition to ASME, he is a life member of the American Society of Metals International, American Society for Testing and Materials, Welding Research Council, Pressure Vessel and Research Council, and International Council on Pressure Vessels Technology.

Dr. Zamrik attended the University of Texas, receiving a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics in 1956, and a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering in 1957.  He continued his education and training at Pennsylvania State University, earning M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in engineering mechanics in 1962 and 1965, respectively.
