Wilkinson, David
| (1771-1852), U.S. mechanical engineer, invented the slide-rest lathe for cutting screw threads (patented Dec. 14, 1798), immensely significant to the machine tool industry. He worked at Slater’s cotton mill for a short time, later made patterns and other items for canal locks in Charlestown, Massachusetts, and from 1800 to 1829 partnered with his brother in David Wilkinson & Company, Pawtucket, Rhode Island, to manufacture textile machinery and cannon. He was born Jan. 5, 1771, Smithfield, Rhode Island, and died Feb. 3, 1852, Caledonia Springs, Ontario. |
