Wilcox, Stephen
| (1830-1893), U.S. mechanical engineer, invented the safety water-tube boiler (1856) with inclined tubes and a steam generator (1867). He invented a caloric and hot-air engine before Ericsson. He and boyhood friend George Babcock formed Babcock & Wilcox (incorporated 1881) to manufacture his boilers and steam engines. He was considered the inventor and mechanic while Babcock was the executive and expositor. He retired in 1881 but continued experiments on multiple-expansion engines in connection with high-pressure boilers for marine use, receiving patents on numerous engines and parts until 1891. He was born Feb. 12, 1830, Westerly, Rhode Island, and died Nov. 27, 1893, Brooklyn, New York. |
