Whittle, Frank
(1907-1996), British aeronautical engineer and pilot, invented the jet engine. His vision for flight at greater speeds and heights was part of his vision he stated in his senior thesis at the Royal Air Force (RAF) College, Cranwell, in 1928. He obtained a patent for his turbo-jet engine in 1930, tested as his first jet engine on the ground in 1937 and finally flown in a Gloster E 28/39 airframe on May 15, 1941. (The first operational jet engine is credited to German Hans Pabst von Ohain, Aug. 27, 1939.) He retired from the RAF in 1948 and eventually moved to the United States. Sir Frank Whittle was born June 1, 1907, Coventry, Warwickshire, England, and died Aug. 8, 1996, Columbia, Maryland.
