Whitney, Eli

(1765-1825), U.S. manufacturer, patented the cotton gin (1793) that revolutionized the U.S. cotton industry and established the first factory to assemble muskets with interchangeable parts, a significant milestone in modern mass production. He was born Dec. 8, 1765, Westboro, Massachusetts, and died Jan. 8, 1825.
