Warner, Worcester Reed
| (1846-1929), U.S. mechanical engineer and ASME's 16th president (1897-98), designed the 36-inch telescope for the University of California Lick Observatory and later built telescopes for use in Canada and Argentina. He established a machine manufacturing business with Ambrose Swasey in 1880 (Chicago and later Cleveland) to build lathes, die-sinking machines, hand gear-cutters, range finders, gun sights, and field telescopes. It incorporated in 1900 as Warner & Swasey Company, at which time he served as president and chair of the board, retiring in 1911. He was born May 16, 1846, Cummington, Massachusetts, and died June 25, 1929, Eisenach, Saxe-Weimar, Germany. |
