ASME President, 1994-1995
Paul J. Torpey, President of ASME for 1994-95, is the executive director of the Empire State Electric Energy Research Corporation (ESEERCO), the cooperative research arm of New York State electric utilities.
Before joining ESEERCO in 1988, Mr. Torpey spent nearly 20 years with Consolidated Edison Company of New York. From 1970 until 1980, he was manager of mechanical studies, then director of energy conversion and fuel research.
Earlier he spent 10 years with Bell Telephone Laboratories as a member of the technical staff.
A member of ASME since 1960 and of the Long Island Section since 1970, he has been active in the Society, particularly in the research are, where he served two terms as Vice President for Research. He as served on the Board of Governors since 1989.
He was a member of the Electric Utility and Applications Committee of the Gas Turbine Division in the late 1970s. As a member of the Board of Governors, he led in the establishment of the Leadership Development Initiative program in which young engineers are selected to work with the ASME policy-setting units in an attempt to increase participation by younger members in the Society.
Mr. Torpey was named a Fellow of ASME in 1976. He is a member of the Visiting Committee for Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Department of Applied Science. He was formerly active in the Air Pollution Control Association and the American Nuclear Society.
He has published a number of articles and holds on U.S. patent. He received B.S. and a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1959 and 1960 from Columbia University.
Mr. Torpey is married and has one child and three grandchildren. He lives in Jamesport, N.Y. |
