Sweet, John Edson
(1832-1916), U.S. mechanical engineer and ASME's 3d president (1884-85), built the first micrometer caliper (1873) in the United States, for making tools, and invented the straight line engine. He was born Oct. 21, 1832, Pompey, New York, and died May 8, 1916, Syracuse, New York.
