Smeaton, John

(1724-1792), British engineer, introduced cast-iron shafts and gearing into wind and water mills, designed large atmospheric pumping engines for mines, and improved the safety of the diving bell. He founded the Society of Civil Engineers in 1771. He was born June 8, 1724, Austhorpe, Yorkshire, England, and died Oct. 28, 1792, Austhorpe.
