Slater, Samuel
| (1768-1831), British-born U.S. mechanical engineer, founded the American cotton-textile industry. Before immigrating to the United States in 1789, Slater apprenticed with Jedediah Strutt (partner of Richard Arkwright) in England. Once in the United States, he found backing to build Arkwright's spinning and carding machinery, with which he established the first successful cotton mill in the United States, as well as many others in the New England region. He was born June 9, 1768, Belper, Derbyshire, England, and died April 21, 1835, Webster, Massachusetts. |
