Sikorsky, Igor (Ivan)
| (1889-1972), Russian-born U.S. aeronautical pioneer, is best known for his helicopter, the VS-300, which flew its first flight Sept. 14, 1939. He designed and built his first helicopter in 1909. In 1913 he built and flew the world's first successful multimotor plane. He founded Sikorsky Aero Engineering Corporation in 1923. In 1931 he built the amphibian American Clipper for transoceanic commercial flights. He was born May 25, 1889, Kiev, and died, Oct. 26, 1972, Easton, Connecticut. |
