ASME President, 2006 - 2007 Term
Terry E. Shoup, Ph.D., P.E., is the 125th president of ASME serving the 2006-2007 term. Shoup is a professor of mechanical engineering at Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, Calif., where he also served as the dean of engineering and held the Sobrato Chair of Engineering. Shoup has more than 35 years of experience in engineering education.
A Fellow of ASME and a past member of the Society’s Board of Governors, Shoup has been a member of ASME since 1969. He has served in leadership roles in the ASME Council on Education and in the Society’s technical divisions and other communities. As an active member in the Council on Education from 1986 to 1992 and senior vice president for Education during 1997-2000, Shoup was involved in a number of K-12 activities and supported programs aimed at young engineers. In addition, Shoup served as ASME representative on the board of directors of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. He received the Distinguished Service Award of the Council on Education in 1988.
At the division level, Shoup has been active in the ASME Computers in Engineering Division and Design Engineering Division, serving as chair of the latter during 1987-1988. He presented several important technical papers at the annual conferences of the Computers in Engineering Division, including “Using the Palm Computer to Augment the Design of Machine Elements” and “Using Spreadsheet Modules to Augment the Design of Worm Gear Geometry.”
Shoup’s academic career began in 1969, when he joined the faculty of Rutgers University as an assistant professor. After leaving Rutgers in 1976, he moved on to teaching and high-level administrative posts at the University of Houston, Texas A&M University, and Florida Atlantic University, before joining Santa Clara University in 1989. In addition to teaching in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Santa Clara, Shoup now serves as Interim Dean, Education, Counseling Psychology and Pastoral Ministries.
Shoup has written more than 100 papers on mechanical design and applied mechanics and is a coauthor of Design of Machine Elements, which Prentice-Hall printed in the eighth edition in 2004.
A registered professional engineer in the state of Ohio, Shoup has worked in industry as a design engineer and served as a consultant to industry, education, and government.
Shoup is the recipient of several honors and awards, including the ASME Gustus Larson Award, Dow Outstanding Young Faculty Award of ASEE and the Medal of Merit in Mechanics from Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. He also received dual Administrator-of-the-Year Awards from Florida Atlantic University, in addition to the Outstanding Alumnus Award from Ohio State University.
Shoup attended Ohio State from 1962 through 1969, earning his B.M.E., M.S.C. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering. He is a member of the American Society for Engineering Education and American Association for the Advancement of Science, among other professional groups. He resides in San Jose, Calif. |
