Sholes, Christopher Latham
(1819-1890), U.S. mechanical engineer, invented (with partners S. W. Soule and G. Glidden) the first practical modern typewriter (patented 1868) to be manufactured (by Remington Arms Company) in 1873 and eventually adopted widely, making significant changes in business operations and the labor force. He was born Feb. 14, 1819, Mooresburg, Pennsylvania, and died Feb. 17, 1890, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
