Root, Elisha King
(1808-1865), U.S. mechanical engineer, credited as one of New England's ablest mechanics, responsible for manufacturing methods for Colt's revolver. Among his many patented inventions was a drop hammer (1853) credited with modernizing the art of die-forging. He designed and built machinery, using the principle of interchangeable parts, for Colt's armory beginning in 1849. He was born May 10, 1808, Ludlow, Massachusetts, and died Aug. 31, 1865, Hartford, Connecticut.
