Rankine, William John Macquorn
(1820-1872), Scottish engineer, well known for his Rankine temperature scale, proposed a thermodynamic theory stating the Law of Conservation of Energy (1853).  He held the chair of civil engineering and mechanics at Glasgow, beginning in 1853.  He was born July 2, 1820, Edinburgh, Scotland, and died December 24, Glasgow, Scotland.
