Perkins, Jacob
| (1766-1849), U.S. goldsmith and inventor, was considered 100 years before his time. His first patented machine made nails and tacks (1795). Other patents and inventions included the printing of bank notes (adopted by the state of Massachusetts, 1809), school copybooks (using first steel plates for printing in the United States, 1809) and stamps (in Britain, 1819), as well as high-pressure steam boilers and engines. He invented a plenometer, bathometer, steam-pressure gun, rapid-fire gun, method of warming and ventilating rooms and holds of ships, fire engines, a water mill, and pumps. He was born July 9, 1766, Newburyport, Massachusetts, and died July 30, 1849, London. |
