Parsons, Charles Algernon
| (1854-1931), British mechanical engineer and manufacturer, invented the multistage steam turbine (1884) that revolutionized marine propulsion. Fitted with a condenser, his turbine was used in an electric power station in 1891. His turbine was placed in service in the Turbinia in 1897 and was soon used warships and other steamers. Other inventions include a mechanical reducing gear and nonskid automobile chains. Sir Charles was born June 13, 1854, London, and died Feb. 11, 1931, Kingston, Jamaica. |
