Parker, John R.

ASME President, 2000 - 2001

John R. Parker, the 119th president of ASME International serving the 2000-2001 term, is a registered professional engineer and consultant to the power industry.  He is a former engineering and finance manager at Raytheon Engineers & Constructors in New York City.  Parker has been an active member of ASME since 1957 and presents a strong background and record of service in the Council on Public Affairs.

John Parker, 65, was born in Cleveland, Ohio.  Following graduation from Parma Schaff High School, he entered Case Institute of Technology, where he received a bachelor’s of science degree in mechanical engineering in 1956.  He earned a master’s of science, also in mechanical engineering, from the University of Connecticut in 1959 and graduated the Navy Nuclear Design School in 1960.  Parker received an MBA from New York University in 1985.

Parker joined the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics in 1956, where he was involved in the design, testing and construction of advanced propulsion systems for nuclear-powered submarines.

He left Electric Boat in 1969 and joined the engineering firm of Stanley Consultants.  As project engineer, Parker managed economic and technical feasibility studies and environmental impact assessments for the firm’s clients in the utility and industrial power markets.  In 1972, he took a position as director of engineering at the Air Correction Division of Universal Oil Products, where he directed the design of scrubbers and other environmental control systems for electric generating plants.  He managed several special projects at Universal Oil Products, including the construction and start-up of a $12 million demonstration facility for emissions control.  During 1974-79, Parker worked at Sanderson and Porter as a project manager on air quality control and desalination projects before joining Ebasco Services Inc., which was acquired by Raytheon Engineers & Constructors in 1993. While there, he worked initially in economic research related to the power industry and later in high-level management capacities in charge of budgets and strategic planning for the company’s business units.  Parker retired from Raytheon in 1998.  He currently resides in Rowayton, Conn., where he is involved in a number of civic and professional activities.

John Parker has served ASME in numerous positions, including Member, Board of Governors; Vice President, Government Relations; and Senior Vice President, Council on Public Affairs (CPA).  He worked on three task forces of the Board of Governors, including chair of the Task Force on Focus on the Future.  Within CPA, Parker has played a major role in diversity issues, position papers, international codes and standards, and the State/Federal Technology Partnership program.

John Parker is a Fellow of ASME and recipient of the Society’s Dedicated Service Award.
