Montgomery, John Joseph
| (1858-1911), U.S. aviation pioneer, is credited with the world's first controlled airborne flight of a human in a heavier-than-air craft (a gull-winged glider), which took place in Aug. 28, 1883. After further experiments and trials, he held several highly publicized flights in early 1905. He received a patent Sept. 18, 1906, for improvements to "aeroplanes," including "parabolically" curved (cambered) wings, used by the U.S. government in conjunction with Wright-built aircraft. He was born Feb. 15, 1858, Yuba City, California, and died Oct. 31, 1911, Evergreen, California, near San Jose (in aircraft accident). |
