Mergenthaler, Ottmar

(1854-1899), German-born American mechanical engineer and instrument maker, invented the first Linotype typesetting machine (patented 1884) as well as more than 50 patented improvements. He was born May 11, 1854, Hachtel, Germany, and died Oct. 28, 1899, Baltimore, Maryland.
