Melville, George Wallace
(1841-1912), U.S. explorer, mechanical engineer and ASME's 29th president, is credited with modernizing the U.S. Navy, as engineer in chief, from 1887 to 1903. He designed machinery for more than 120 ships, two of them the fastest warships afloat, and introduced improvements such as the triple-screw propulsion system and vertical boiler. He was born July 31, 1841, New York City, and died March 17, 1912, Philadelphia.
