Marcus, Siegfried
(1831-1898), German mechanical engineer, invented the world's earliest gasoline-powered automobile (1864), forerunner of the modern automobile. His second vehicle (ca. 1875), which still exists, was much improved and when overhauled in 1949-50 ran at about 5 miles per hour (8 kilometers per hour). He held about 76 patents in a dozen countries, including an electric lamp (1877) and carburetor. He was born Sept. 18, 1831, Malchin, Mecklenburg, Germany, and died June 30, 1898, Vienna, Austria.
