LaTrobe, Benjamin H.
(Sr.) (1764-1820), notable British-born American architect and mechanical engineer, studied engineering under John Smeaton and architecture under Samuel Pepys Cockerell. He established high standards of professional excellence in design and construction techniques. His office apprenticeship program offered the first important training in both professions in the United States. He was born May 1, 1764, Fulneck, Yorkshire, England, and died Sept. 3, 1820, New Orleans, Louisiana.
