Kelley, William
(1811-1888), U.S. mechanical engineer and manufacturer, invented (ca. 1850) a converter for making steel using an air blast to increase heat (U.S. patent issued June 23, 1857) and successfully defended it against the Bessemer rights purchased by Alexander Holley in 1863 and declared the original inventor. He was born Aug. 12, 1811, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and died Feb. 11, 1888, Louisville, Kentucky.
