Janney, Eli Hamilton
(1831-1912), U.S. mechanical engineer, is best known for his railroad car couplers, especially the one patented April 29, 1873, first used on the Southern Railroad, then adopted by the Pennsylvania Railroad, and made standard for railroads in 1888 by the Master Car Builders' Association. He was born Nov. 12, 1831, Loudoun County, Virginia, and died June 16, 1912, Alexandria, Virginia.
