Isherwood, Benjamin Franklin
(1822-1915), U.S. mechanical engineer, was engineer in chief of the U.S. Navy from 1861 to 1884, designing, building, and overseeing a steam-powered fleet that grew from 28 to about 600 within the first few years (during the American Civil War). He wrote two major treatises on steam power for ships (1859 and 1863-65), which became standard reading worldwide. He was born Oct. 6, 1822, New York City, and died June 19, 1915, New York City.
