Amos E. Holt, Ph.D., is the 128th president of the Society, serving the 2009-2010 term.   A member of ASME since 1982, he has served in many leadership positions during his 26-year affiliation with the Society, most recently as secretary and treasurer.  Other offices have included chair of the Committee on Finance and Investment, chair of the Continuing Education Institute, and vice president of the Pressure Technology Group. 

Holt is a technical expert in the areas of nondestructive evaluation (NDE) and advanced engineering materials.  He is the vice president of Environmental, Safety, and Quality Systems for Southwest Research Institute® in San Antonio, Texas, where he is responsible for implementing necessary environmental, safety, and quality systems to meet client requirements and all applicable governmental standards, regulations, and codes.

Prior to joining Southwest Research Institute in 1985, Holt worked as section manager for Babcock & Wilcox, where he was involved in NDE inspections and diagnostic systems. He developed several new products supporting NDE, including an acoustic monitor and modular ultrasonic inspection system for boilers.  He also directed electronic and mechanical design operations as well as software development programs.

Holt worked at Babcock & Wilcox for 13 years, during which time he developed his expert skills in NDE, particularly in the areas of ultrasonic imaging and acoustic holography.  He has published more than 40 technical papers and articles on acoustic holography and other subjects pertaining to NDE.  He holds five patents.

Holt received a B.S. in physics from Arlington State College and master’s degree in physics from the University of Texas, Arlington.  He continued his education and training at Nova Southeastern University, earning his Ph.D. in computer and information sciences in 1994.  He served in the 25th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1965.

Holt was named a fellow of ASME in 1993 and honorary member in 2002.  He also was a lecturer in the ASME Distinguished Lecturers’ Program and in 2000, became a recipient of the Society’s Dedicated Service Award.

In addition to ASME, Holt is a member of the American Society for Quality, Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and Sigma Pi Sigma.
