Hollerith, Herman
(1860-1929), U.S. mechanical engineer and statistician, created a system of recording and retrieving information on punched cards (1880) and organized the Tabulating Machine Company in 1896, which through subsequent mergers grew into the International Business Machines (IBM) Company. His tabulating machines are considered important precursors of the electronic computer. He was born Feb. 29, 1860, Buffalo, New York, and died Nov. 17, 1929, Washington, D.C.
