Fulton, Robert
(1765-1815), U.S. mechanical engineer, is known for the development of the steamboat into a commercial success (Clermont, 1807). He also developed the first useful submarine and torpedo (1800) and the world?s first steam warship (1814). He was born Nov. 14, 1765, Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, and died Feb. 24, 1815, New York City.
