John H. Fernandes

ASME President, 1993-1994

John H. Fernandes is a mechanical engineering consultant who lives in Tiverton, R.I.

Dr. Fernandes has long been active in ASME, particularly in the codes and standards area.  He served as Senior Vice President for the Council on Codes and Standards and Vise President for the Board on Performance Test Codes.  He also was committee member and editor for performance test codes, Chairman of the Performance Test Code Committee on Incinerators, and a member of the Performance Test Code Committees on General Instructions and on Definitions and Values.

In other ASME areas, he was a member of the Board of Governors, the Council on Engineering Committee on Technical Planning, and the Board on Public Information. He was also active in the local sections and as a student member, and is still actively involved in the Providence Section.

From 1963 to 1984, he worked for Combustion Engineering, where his last position was senior technology consultant and director of technology transfer. Earlier he was director of technical activities coordinating inter-divisional engineering activities and manager of the Raymond Division and chief project engineer in the New Products Division.

After leaving Combustion Engineering, Dr. Fernandes spent six years with the Maguire Group, where he was vice president of the Energy Division, and was responsible for the company’s activities in power and process energy fields.  Since 1990 he has conducted a consulting business.  His engineering areas of specialty include thermal/fluid sciences, environmental control studies, and fuels and fuel usage.

From 1960 until 1963, he was professor and head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Manhattan College, where he directed the development of the college’s new mechanical engineering program.  Between 1950 and 1960, he was associate professor of mechanical engineering at Lafayette College, responsible for the department’s laboratories and their redesign and reconstruction.  From 1957 until 1960, he was also director of the Lafayette Evening College.

He received a M.S. in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University and a Sc.D. from Calvin Coolidge College.

In addition to being a Fellow of ASME, Dr. Fernandes is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, , the Air and Waste Management Association, and the American Academy of Environmental Engineers.  He is a member of two engineering honor societies, Pi Tau Sigma and Mu Epson.
He has published more than 40 articles on various aspects of engineering and holds 10 patents. He is a registered professional engineer in nine states.  He is listed in Who’s Who in Engineering, Who’s Who in the East, International Who’s Who in Engineering, Who’s Who in Technology Today, and American Men and Women of Science.   Dr. Fernandes is married and has six children.
