ASME President, 2005-2006

Richard E. “Gene” Feigel is the 124th president of ASME serving the 2005-2006 term. Feigel is vice president of engineering for Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company in Hartford, Conn. In this capacity, he is responsible for risk analysis and consults with clients worldwide on strategies for risk mitigation, inspection, and maintenance of boilers and related pressure systems. He has worked at Hartford Steam Boiler since 1977.

At ASME, Feigel has been involved in technical standards development for more than 25 years. Among the many positions he has held are chair, B31 Piping Main Committee; chair and senior vice president, Council on Codes and Standards, and vice president, Pressure Technology Codes and Standards.

Feigel is an active spokesperson promoting the globalization of ASME codes and standards and has made presentations at major technical venues in China, Mexico, Belgium, Sweden, Germany, France, Australia, and other countries. He also has presented numerous papers on risk assessment, quality assurance, power plant reliability, fatigue analysis, loss prevention, stress analysis, and other aspects of pressure vessel technology. Other papers and speeches have covered nuclear power plant construction and terrorism and homeland security.

Feigel is the recipient of several ASME honors and awards recognizing achievement and service in the engineering profession. These include the Distinguished Service Award, J. Hall Taylor Medal, Melvin R. Green Codes and Standards Medal, and Distinguished Engineer of the Year, presented by the ASME Hartford Section. He is an ASME Fellow.

Gene Feigel attended Purdue University and received a bachelor’s degree in philosophy in 1968. He earned a master’s degree and doctorate in philosophy from Pennsylvania State University in 1971 and 1984, respectively.
