Ericsson, John
(1803-1889), Swedish-American mechanical engineer, built the first ironclad warship, the Monitor (1862), and developed the screw propeller (1836). His inventions largely revolutionized navigation and the construction of warships. He also experimented with caloric engines and built the locomotive Novelty in 1829, which competed against George Stephenson?s Rocket. He received 36 U.S. patents. He was born July 1, 1803, Langbanshyttan, Sweden, and died March 8, 1889, New York City.
