Deere, John
(1804-1886), U.S. mechanical engineer who pioneered the manufacture of plows. He opened his shop in 1837 and by 1846 was making 1,000 plows a year. By 1857 his new company in Moline, Illinois, produced 10,000 plows annually. With son and son-in-law, Deere & Co. was incorporated in 1868. He was born Feb. 7, 1804, Rutland, Vermont, and died May 17, 1886.
