Daimler, Gottlieb Wilhelm
(1834-1900), German mechanical engineer and automobile pioneer, invented the first high-speed internal combustion engine (1883) and a carburetor (1885) using gasoline as a fuel. He built perhaps the first motorcycle (1885). In 1890 he founded Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft, which produced the Mercedes (1889), later merging into Daimler-Benz & Co. in 1926.
