Corliss, George Henry
(1817-1888), considered equal in stature to James Watt, was a mechanical engineer who significantly improved and refined the steam engine. In 1848, Corliss improved the valve gear regulated by the centrifugal governor, which revolutionized steam engine design by providing for uniform motion regardless of load and by reducing the waste of steam, thus dramatically reduced fuel costs.  He received 67 patents in all.  He was born June 2, 1817, in Easton, New York, and died Feb. 21, 1888, in Providence, Rhode Island.
