Colt, Samuel

(1814-1862), U.S. mechanical engineer and pioneer in firearms, patented the first practical revolving firearm with rotating cylinder in the United States (Feb. 25, 1837). In 1854 he built a large armory and established an international business. He was born July 19, 1814, Hartford, Conn., and died Jan. 10, 1862, Hartford.
